For my dog, I really don’t want to utilize a crate. Does another method?
The fundamental idea behind potty training is to
-
Bring your dog outside before it urinates or poops inside the house (always allow your dog to relieve itself outside the house prior to entering)
-
If your dog is aggressively urinating within the home, pick him up as soon as possible and take him outside. Avoid yelling, hitting, or screaming at your dog since this will make them scared of you and make them flee; it won’t help them learn potty training.
What will help is the basic repetition of this over time.
Our pups are trained to go potty on demand. Basically, we just add the comment “get busy” to what you stated. This is such a great ability to have.
This is something I also do! extremely beneficial for public spaces.
Take your dog outside and wait patiently. As soon as it pees or poops, go all out with praise: “Good dog! You’re the best! So smart! So clever!” Dogs don’t pick up on subtle cues like humans do, so be overly enthusiastic. Inside the house, keep a close eye on your dog. If you notice it sniffing or circling, immediately take it outside. If it does its business, repeat the enthusiastic praise. Most dogs catch on quickly, though puppies may take a little longer as they develop bladder control.
It’s also worth noting that male dogs might need a refresher on potty training during adolescence, as they sometimes view scent marking and regular peeing as two different behaviors.
