Looking for the Toughest Dog Collar and Leash Out There?

Hey everyone,

My dog’s collar broke while we were out for a walk tonight, and he bolted down a busy street. It was terrifying because it was dark, and I thought he might get hit by a car.

I need a new collar and leash that can handle anything. Any solid recommendations on durable options would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

You could try a lunge line for horses. It’s a tough option if you need something reliable. It’s often used as a cheaper long line for dogs too.

Also, Ruffwear gear is pretty sturdy.

Ever considered using a harness instead?

I’m open to it. Do you have any good brands you’d suggest?

Sure, here’s a link with some solid reviews:

Remember, collars mainly hold ID tags. If your only collar snaps, your dog’s without ID. With a harness, if one piece fails, you still have ID on them.

Anything from Ruffwear is top-notch and built to last.

For larger dogs, Rogz Landing Strip is a good choice with a sturdy buckle. Other solid brands include Stillwater Kennel Supply, K9-Crew, and El Perro.

Try Lupine collars. They’re super durable and come with a lifetime guarantee; even if your dog chews it to pieces.

Cotton rope leashes and collars are a great choice. They’re available on Etsy and are gentle on your dog too.

Buckle failure is common with collars, which is why I prefer martingale collars. Make sure it’s fitted right so it won’t choke when tightened.

Avoid collars with plastic clasps. I use a thick leather belt-style collar with metal clasps, and for extra security, a front-clip harness with a double-sided leather leash that clips both to the harness and collar.

For really strong dogs, try Julius K9. For average-sized dogs, brands like Rogz, Hurtta, and Ruffwear are great.

If you’re on a budget, Coastal or Hamilton double-ply nylon leashes and collars work well too. I personally prefer a good-quality leather leash and buckle collar from a local feed store over the stiff leather ones from big-box pet stores.
