My dog ate a bag of bird food. Should I stay home to monitor them?

My dog ate about 1kg of dry bird food two hours ago, including fruits, nuts, sunflower seeds, veggies, and even dry chili peppers. She carefully cracked open the shelled nuts to eat the insides. I have an appointment in a few hours and am concerned she might have gastrointestinal issues while I’m gone for two hours. What would you do in this situation?

Did the fruits contain raisins, like some bird mixes? That could be a problem.

I feel you… I’ve got a bird and a dog, and it’s way too easy to slip up. Now, I only grab bird food without any of that risky stuff since my bird just tosses it all on the floor. Additionally, I don’t even mess with buying grapes anymore, just in case someone leaves them out by mistake.

Oh wow, I didn’t even think about that raisins are toxic to dogs. Have you had any experience with dogs eating raisins? How bad was it? And in case that happens, how can one deal with it?

At first, I didn’t think raisins were a concern and figured the chili peppers in the bird feed might just cause minor discomfort for the dog. But when I realized raisins are commonly added to bird feed, I panicked. Ever since I learned how dangerous grapes and raisins are for dogs, I’ve been warning others. While chocolate is toxic, a small amount like a chocolate chip usually only causes mild issues like an upset stomach. But just a few grapes can make a dog seriously ill, so I believe grapes are far more dangerous than chocolate.

Uhmmm… As someone who grew up on a vineyard where dogs would eat grapes directly from the vines without any apparent health issues, I think the danger of grapes may be overexaggerated. I don’t mean they’re completely safe, but I think it’s not as bad as y’all make it look. Idk, I could be wrong though. lol

OMG! I just confirmed, there were raisins in the bird food. I think my appointment is cancelled and we’re straight up headed to the vet right about now!

If you’re talking about raisins when you say dried fruits, you gotta call your vet. Some dogs may be alright, but for others, it could really mess them up. My dog had to chill at the vet for 72 hours and needed follow-up kidney tests after a kid dropped a chocolate and raisin bar at my place without me knowing. Luckily, he didn’t have any lasting issues, but that was only because he got treated in time.

I think it’s prudent to call your vet and ask how risky it could be for your dog. If there’s not much risk, you can proceed to your appointment without worry.
