My dog won't poop

My 14-month-old Akita/Labrador mix (thought she was a Collie/Labrador before DNA results) has an interesting pooping habit. She’ll go at the park, on hikes, or even in my kitchen, but refuses to poop in our yard and has stopped pooping during walks. Instead, she seems to hold it in uncomfortably. She might be needing longer walks than the three we already give her each day, but three miles in the dark isn’t exactly my idea of fun.

The challenging part is she’s in training to be a Service Dog, so having a regular elimination schedule is crucial. Tomorrow, we’re taking her for a check-up to rule out any medical issues. If it turns out to be behavioral, though… Why won’t you just go, doggo?

Put an end to your long walk. To get your dog to poop, just stay still and bide your time. They’ll eventually learn that there will be a reward when they poop and that you won’t move on until they do. My dog has been trained to go relieve herself when I say “be quick” when she urinates or poops since she was 10 weeks old. Wishing you luck!
