I have a rescue pit mix named Salt who’s about a year and a half. For some reason, after an incident where they ingested THC, Salt has become super scared of me. They’ll cower and walk away from me, and if I get too close, they get aggressive. Has anyone else had a dog act this way after something happened? I really want to help them feel safe again, but IDK what to do.
Oh man, that sounds tough! I’ve heard of dogs reacting like this after ingesting stuff like THC. It might have created a bad association with you. Try using treats and positive reinforcement to rebuild trust. It might take some time but hang in there!
@RONALD
Yeah, I agree. If Salt is food motivated, you can start using treats to get closer to them without forcing interaction. It’ll help them associate you with good things again. Don’t rush it though!
@RONALD
IDK, I’ve never had a dog react like that. Maybe try taking it slow and giving them space until they’re comfortable again? Hope they feel better soon!
My dog did something similar after a bad experience. What worked for me was just letting them come to me on their own terms, without any pressure. Maybe try some calm play to show that you’re not a threat?
@Terryanne
That sounds like a good approach. I’ve done the same, just staying chill and not pushing them too much. It took time but they came around eventually.
I’d say don’t take it personally, Salt might just be associating you with the bad thing that happened. If they’re food driven, try some simple obedience training with positive reinforcement, like sit or paw. It helps rebuild trust.
@lincolny
For sure, keeping it positive is key. I did some leash training with my dog after something similar and it helped so much. It’s all about getting them comfortable with you again.
Wow, that’s rough! My dog was scared of me for a bit too after a traumatic event. What really worked was calm bonding activities like petting or just sitting next to them. No pressure, just being there. It’ll take time.
@Delilah
I feel you! Mine was the same after an incident. I tried giving them space but also being present with them quietly. It really helped in the long run.
Same here, my dog started getting distant after something happened. We went back to basics: food rewards, slow introductions, and avoiding any confrontational moments. It’ll help with their confidence over time.
@Avery
I tried that too! It was tough but it worked. Just don’t rush it and let them take the lead. Good luck!
